Key to Broadcast Automation is the ability to connect to and accurately control all of the devices that make up a broadcast playout chain.
This typically requires each controller in a Pebble Beach Systems installation to be configured with multiple serial ports.
While there has been a move to control more devices via network protocols, many broadcasters opt to use serial connections to the primary devices in a system because of the reliability of a point to point connection.
In almost every installation the customer will choose to control their playout server ports and their central routing switcher using serial connections. When combined with the ability of Pebble Beach Systems software to continue running in the event of a network failure, this provides an exceptionally robust architecture.
In order to provide the high number of serial ports needed in each Controller, Pebble Beach Systems uses the RocketPort series of cards configured to give up to 64 RS-422 ports.
Initially the RocketPort 8 port cards were used, but more recently they have standardised on the RocketPort 16 cards.
As the Controllers are configured into a main and backup pair, a custom designed changeover switch is used to interface to the RocketPort cards from each controller to the devices in the system.
This changeover switch then provides the devices with a 9 pin D-type connection interface for each port.
