VTR Control across a LAN – Sky Sports News HD

Product: DeviceMaster RTS

When Sky Sports News HD moved to their new studio facility, they had production staff located in the newsroom, but needed control over 6 VTRs in a different building.

Hi Tech Systems were asked to provide a system to allow this to happen, and partnered with Comtrol UK to use the DeviceMaster Serial over Ethernet Server.

Each journalist has a Hi Tech asigN control panel which is linked across the stations LAN to an AViTA, Hi Tech’s real-time video server production control system for recording, searching and playing media. This is located in teh equipment room, interfacing to the VTRs via RS-422 VDCP using the DeviceMaster serial server.
The AViTA also links to a video router via an on board serial connection.

Each journalist then controls the VTRs they have access to, selecting the appropriate clip to add to the playout.
The router switches the VTRs video that the jounralists panel giving them complete control.
Each asigN unit provides the usual jog, shuffle, cue and play.

When finished with the VTR, the jounralist release it for others to use.

The DeviceMaster-RTS is a key component in this overall setup, allowing for completely seamless access to the VTR units and Video Servers.

The low latency of the RTS used provided no discernable difference between LAN connected and direct connected asigN/AVITA/VTR links.
