The iConverter RS-422/485 is a managed serial RS-422 and RS-485 to fibre converter that transmits serial protocol over fibre.
Operating in pairs, the iConverter 422/485 extends serial distances over fibre up to 120km.

It is available with a single-mode dual fibre, multimode dual fibre or single-mode single-fibre transceiver, and either a DB9F or terminal block serial connector.

The iConverter RS422/485 automatically detects the data rate of connected Full-Duplex serial devices, ranging from 110bps to 1,024,000bps, automatically adjusting to changes in the connected device’s full-duplex data rate during operation without reconfiguration or interruption of service.

Half or Full Duplex RS-485 (also called Multipoint RS-422) are supported via a baud rate DIP-switch to match the master/slave communication timing.

The iConverter RS422/485 removes the need for using a specific DTE or DCE cable to connect to different devices by using a DIP switch to configure the peripheral type, and a built in remote fibre loopback DIP switch provides easy validation of the entire fibre segment without interrupting operations.

RS-422/485 termination resistors are integrated and configurable, allowing the unit to be deployed at any node in the serial line.

The RS-422 plug-in module can be used in managed or unmanaged applications. Management is accomplished by installing an iConverter Management Module (NMM2) or Network Interface Device (NID) in the same chassis.

You can override the DIP switch selections for DTE or DCE and Fibre Loopback Test by using the management software, and real-time RS422 parameters can be monitored, including power, link, data activity status, module type and model, hardware and software revisions, serial numbers and a user-defined identifier.

The iConverter 422/485 is a hot swappable module, and can be mounted in a variety of chassis options including 1, 2, 5 or 19 module chassis.

Multidrop RS422/485 example

In this example, the iConverter RS422/485 modules are deployed to enable serial network distance extension over fibre.
The iConverter RS422/485 modules are installed at each end of the fibre link and provide media conversion for connectivity between serial host/controller and multi-drop serial devices.
