S/FXT Fast Ethernet Bridging Media Converter
The miConverter S/FXT Fast Ethernet fibre to 10/100/1000BASE-T media converters offer an ideal solution for mobile applications where lightweight, compact size, and low power consumption are paramount. Weighing less than 2.5 oz. (72 grams) and measuring just about the length of a standard house key, the miConverter S-Series converters are incredibly portable, easily slipping into any pocket or laptop carrying case.
These ultra-compact media converters can be powered via USB, enabling fibre connectivity in environments where AC or DC power sources are unavailable, such as field-deployed fibre-to-the-laptop setups and military applications. Fibre is directly connected to the laptop, where it’s converted to copper UTP and linked to the laptop’s RJ-45 port using a standard Ethernet patch cable. Power is drawn from the laptop’s USB port via a standard USB cable, eliminating the need for electrical outlets.
For scenarios not utilizing USB power, the S-Series product is also compatible with country-specific AC/DC power adapters, ensuring versatility across electrical outlet types worldwide.
Setting up the miConverter S-Series is hassle-free, with its RJ-45 port automatically negotiating speed, duplex mode, and cross-over functions for laptops with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-TX Ethernet capabilities. LED indicators provide clear status updates on power, network connectivity, and data activity.
The S-Series is equipped with 100BASE-X fixed fibre transceivers (SC or ST connectors) and supports a range of options including multimode, single-mode, and single-fibre configurations. Additionally, it supports Small Form Pluggable (SFP) transceivers, offering adaptability to different fibre types, speeds, distances, and even Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology to enhance fibre infrastructure bandwidth capacity.
Operating within a standard temperature range of 0 to 50°C, the S-Series media converters are reliable in typical environments. For deployments in harsh conditions, models with a wide operating temperature range of -40 to 60°C are also available, ensuring durability and performance in extreme environments.

Fibre to the Laptop
The application diagram depicts a laptop computer connected to a fibre network.
The miConverter S-Series media converter connects to the laptop using two cables. The USB Power Cable draws electrical current from the USB port (1.0 or 2.0) of the laptop. Power from the USB port of the computer is automatically shut off when the computer is powered down, turning off the media converter. The UTP cable provides connectivity between the laptop and the copper port on the converter. The converter provides 10/100/1000BASE-T UTP to a 100BASE-X fibre conversion, which can extend the fibre link up to 30km.
The miConverter S-Series media converter is an excellent solution for fibre-to-the-laptop applications where fibre connectivity is required and local power is not available.
Fibre Extension
In this application, a pair of miConverter S-Series media converters are used to connect Ethernet switches between buildings via fibre. UTP cables connect the media converters to the Fast Ethernet switches.
Multimode, single-mode, or single-mode single-fibre can be used.
