Data Centre Fibre Channel CWDM Interconnect

Data centers typically operate clusters of Storage Area Network (SAN) servers and storage arrays connected via Fibre Channel. To ensure business continuity and real-time data access, these facilities require high-speed connectivity between on-site and off-site SANs for transaction storage, database mirroring, and disaster recovery. Extending the SAN from one data center to another enables each site to maintain a synchronized mirror of critical databases.

In this application, Omnitron iConverter xFF transponders and CWDM/X Multiplexers were deployed to link Fibre Channel switches between two data centers. This connection allows seamless communication between SAN servers at both locations, providing redundancy, high availability, and robust data protection.

Overcoming the Cost of Proprietary Fibre Channel CWDM SFPs

Proprietary Fibre Channel CWDM SFP transceivers can significantly increase deployment costs. To eliminate this expense, the xFF transponders convert standard 850nm or 1310nm wavelengths to CWDM wavelengths—delivering the same high-performance connectivity at a fraction of the cost. This approach provides an economical and flexible alternative to using vendor-specific SFPs.

Implementation: CWDM Fibre Channel Connectivity

In this deployment, fiber patch cables connect xFF transponders—mounted in a high-density 19-Module Chassis—to the ports on each Fibre Channel switch. Four transponders convert standard wavelengths to CWDM wavelengths (channels) using Small Form Pluggable (SFP) transceivers.

The CWDM SFPs operate at specific wavelengths corresponding to the channel ports on the iConverter CWDM/X Multiplexer, connected via color-coded fiber patch cables representing different CWDM wavelengths. The CWDM/X Multiplexer then combines these wavelengths onto a single CWDM Common Fiber Line, efficiently transporting all four Fibre Channel links between the data centers.
